The International Airport of Faro is located only 4km from the city of Faro. Faro Airport is particularly popular with tourists from the United Kingdom and Ireland, as they make up for the largest part of the 9 million visitors (2019) of the airport. During the Covid-19 pandemic, there was a significant drop in visitors at Faro Airport, as they only welcomed 2 million visitors in 2020. Although the situation stays unclear at times, it is expected that flight numbers will soon go up again.

Why you should not skip Faro city

Faro is the largest city in the Algarve but is sadly often overlooked to visit as tourists only see the airport before traveling to their final holiday destination. And that's a shame because it's a city that has a rich culture and that is full of history, offering many interesting tourist attractions.

Faro is a charming old town with cobbled streets, especially the Cidade Velha (old town) is worth your while. There are well-maintained parks and plazas and the old town offers a large selection of cosy cafés, bars and traditional restaurants where you can spoil your taste buds.

When it comes to discovering traditional Portuguese flavors, restaurant Adega Nova offers everything you can ask for. This traditional Portuguese restaurant can be found in the city center of Faro and is located in an old warehouse of tiles and bricks. The menu is varied, all year round, which makes the Adega a temple of traditional Portuguese cuisine.

You can’t go to Portugal without eating at least one pastel de nata (a day!) These custard tartlets are filled with the flakiest, butteriest pastry casing imaginable and are not to be missed when visiting the city. There are many coffee shops and bakeries that offer pastéis de nata, so make sure you try them!

The best golf courses near Faro Airport

When it comes to golf, the Algarve is a wonderful area for golfers. The courses are (relatively) close to each other, and the standards are high. The weather is excellent all year round and many courses have been designed by famous golf course architects like Robert Trent Jones Jr., Martin Hawtree and Frank Pennink.

Most golf courses near Faro Airport are located around Vilamoura, which is located west of Faro. There are also quite a few nice golf courses east of Faro Airport. That area is less crowded and is home to the best golf course and resort of Portugal, Monte Rei Golf & Country Club. For those of you who want to stay in a golf resort, hotel or apartment close to Faro Airport, we've created this list of The 6 best golf courses near Faro Airport based on their rating (and proximity of 40 km from Faro) on Leadingcourses.com.
