Royal Porthcawl feels like a relic from golf’s past. Passing through the entrance gates is almost like being granted an audience with the King — albeit at his seaside retreat. The clubhouse stands virtually on the shoreline, separated from the beach only by a public footpath. Before entering the clubhouse, however, visitors report to the caddiemaster in a separate building. This is a proper caddiemaster’s operation: you pass the old caddie lodges before stepping into a spacious and well-stocked professional shop. Royal Porthcawl is a traditional golf club with its own customs and routines, rather than a modern resort designed primarily around visiting players. This can also be seen by the more formal clothing of the members. However, it does not feel restricted, there’s even a rather relaxed atmosphere. The course runs alongside the Bristol Channel. The sea does not dominate the routing in the way it does at some coastal courses. Its main influence is the unrestricted supply of wind, which can race across the exposed terrain without being slowed by trees or substantial vegetation. Royal Porthcawl is known as a demanding championship links, with the wind and strategically positioned bunkers central to its challenge. Conditions were exceptionally dry when we played. The fairways had turned a uniform pale brown and were sometimes barely distinguishable from the surrounding ground. Several blind or semi-blind tee shots made it even harder to find the correct route. On some holes, reaching the visible part of the fairway required a long and straight drive. This is not a course for the faint-hearted. The punishment is severe. The rough is not necessarily the greatest danger; the bunkers are far more ruthless. They do not merely protect the greens but also dictate play from the fairways. Avoiding them with the initial shot is not always enough, as sloping ground can gather the ball and feed it towards the sand. Bunker avoidence is priority number one in course management. Once on the greens, the ball rolls as if it were moving across a billiard table. They are quick, but the contours are honest: read the line correctly and strike a committed putt, and the ball generally behaves as expected. This course is not about postcard views at every turn, but about managing to score when your play is tested. The reward after the final putt is proportional to everything that came before it. Returning to the historic clubhouse feels less like simply finishing another round and more like having survived an examination. Royal Porthcawl is severe, uncompromising and occasionally intimidating, but that is exactly what makes the experience memorable.

Day 5, course 8 of my Wales golf experience. We arrived to Royal Porthcawl well ahead of our teetime, so we had time to enjoy the beauty of this place. First of all area around the course is very impressive and kind of poshy. Arriving you see from distance the beautiful hotel and you need to pass through the gate to the parking lot. Clubhouse and restaurant are small building with typical architecture. Once you set foot into pro shop, which by the way is well equipped with whatever you need or forgot for your round. We quickly checked in and went straight to restaurant to enjoy tasty lunch and hospitality of the restaurant. Sitting on terrace you can either enjoy view on sea or practice on perfect green which almost look like infinite green. No walk to kind of distant driving range, despite the information that its newly rebuild. We will have to chance to check when on 9th green. So off tho the game. From 1st tee its huge difference to quality to already played courses. This course is top notch. Typical links design, much undulation, deep green bunkers strategically placed. Course is very well maintained, despite the dry summer. Greens were just perfect, yes fairways were dry but that is how it should be on links courses. For those playing first time I would suggest to play conservative and enjoy rather than try to score, or hire caddy who will help you with course management. From my personal experience, I favor more front nine rather than back nine, however its very hard to choose, cause all course were just beauty. I really enjoyed all par 3s there. And yes the finishing hole would be probably the signature one for me. Kind of remind me about Castle Stuart finishing hole. Anyway the course is just pure joy and perfection, appreciate very much the hospitality and hope to come back again.

Playing Royal Portcawl just a few days after the end of the AIG Women's Open was an experience. The course has long been ranked among the world's top 100 and is clearly number one in Wales. Needless to say, the course was in A1 condition. Golfers' hearts will leap for joy at the perfect green bunkers, which are almost frightening. The higher price per round is offset by the unique experience.

Course flag18 trous
