Het is even rijden bergop maar je krijgt dan ook wat. Een geweldig clubhuis in oud Engelse sfeer waar de gelukkigste dame van de regio, omdat ze op de golfbaan werken mag, ons vriendelijk te woord stond. Na mijn aanmelding en betaling werd ik begeleid naar de caddy master. Buggie was prima, inclusief een digitale weergave van de golfbaan, afstandsmeter waarop je je coursemanagement kon bepalen. In de shop ook fantastisch geholpen door twee dames.

Ik startte samen met vriendin vanaf hole 11 als onderdeel van een test voor de wedstrijd van komende zondag (vroeger was hole 11 de eerste hole). Teeboxen liggen er mooi bij, evenals de fairway's. En wat is dit een memorabele baan om te mogen golfen. Deze baan ademt golf zoals het altijd was. De greens waren goed verzorgd op wat pitchmarks na.

Tijdens mijn rondje kwam iemand van de club mij vragen of alles nog okay was en of we iets nodig hadden. Wat een service!

Na 18 holes werden we vriendelijk te woord gestaan door een vriendelijke barman die zalige witte wijn serveerde. Het was mooie dag!

Whenever I see that the golf is located on the slopes of some steep mountain I am a little skeptical so this time was no different and I didn’t quite expect a lot from this layout… and boy was I wrong! This is one of the best surprises among mountain courses.

It takes about 25 minutes up the curvy road from the sea level of Monte Carlo almost all the way to the top of the Agel mountain where you reach the plateau at an elevation of 900 meters above the sea where the golf course was built.

It was a last minute trip so again I didn’t do my homework and I didn't know much about this golf course… The Monte-Carlo Golf Club was actually a European Tour venue from 1984 to 1992 and among the winners of the Monte-Carlo Open are Sam Torrance, Seve Ballesteros and Ian Woosnam who won the final three events.

The layout is very good and quite fair off the tee. Despite its hilly location most of the fairways are all pretty level so you won’t have many awkward lies. The only exception is the 13th fairway which is sloping severely towards the green well below but the fairway is so well shaped that you probably won't have a bad lie.

Par-4 4th is off the charts with its split fairway way below the tee box - stunning hole and nice views of the Mediterranean sea. 5th is an excellent Par-3 located on the edge of the cliff and offers beautiful views of Monte Carlo. Two great Par-4’s are next... The 6th is a short one with a nicely shaped fairway and raised green - tricky little devil. 7th hole is a long dogleg right with lovely views from the green. The 9th hole is much likable 90-degrees dogleg right Par-4 with a very good punchbowl green - I like it a lot. 13th is awesome downhill Par-4 - take your driver and rip it towards the target line post, below the tiny green awaits. 14th is another cute Par-3 with snow covered Alps in the background. I also like the dogleg left Par-5 16th which is reachable with two good shots. The only thing I didn’t really like was the brutal start as the 1st (and maybe 2nd hole) is not an easy warm up hole!

Course conditions were very good with nice fairways and very good but quite hard and bouncy greens. Unfortunately the pro-shop and the restaurant were closed as it was Monday.

Monte-Carlo Golf Club is a must play if you are in the area.
