In early July in good condition though it has been dry for a long time, narrow and broad fairways, nice hilly last holes, but in the main a flat course, astonishing castle, unfortunately a poor inside.

Dit is een echte Parkbaan met supersnelle greens. Een fantastisch clubhuis met een geweldige uitstraling. De shop is gevestigd in een vreemde aanbouw. De baan heeft slechts 1 par 5 en is moeilijk te spelen, mede door de uitdagende greens.

Our first course on a four day trip to East Lothian and what a good start. An enthusiastic greeting awaited us in the Clubhouse and Pro Shop - the Pro even got us away an hour earlier than scheduled. No real time to use the practice facilities but they looked more than adequate for warming up or working on your game. The course looked in fantastic condition as we stood on the first tee and we weren't to be disappointed. Wide open well manicured tree lined fairways encouraged the use of driver on almost all the holes (except the par 3's) and only the most errant of hits resulted in lost balls. The greens were in super condition and ran at a nice speed and true.

The visitors locker room is ancient and in need of modernisation to match the standard of the rest of the clubhouse.

The Musselburgh Golf Club is relatief jong (voor Schotse begrippen): opgericht in 1938.

De baan is aangelegd op oude landbouwgrond, maar de bomen beginnen de baan steeds meer contouren te geven. Ik denk dat je het nu als parkbaan zou aanmerken. De baan is ruim opgezet, dus je hebt weinig last van andere flights.

De baan begint vriendelijk: een korte par4 met een downhill teeshot. Maar na een paar easy holes, worden de holes steeds langer, dus je moet (in tegenstelling tot veel andere banen in Schotland) wel gas geven vanaf de tee. Daar staat dan tegenover dat de fairways behoorlijk breed zijn. Veel bunkers en af en toe een waterhazard om rekening mee te houden. Greens niet overdreven moeilijk aan te spelen (je kan ze hoog aanspelen), maar ze lopen wel wat traag.

Ik kan niet alle holes terughalen, maar er zaten een paar mooie par4 holes tussen met als laatste hole een lange par4 uphill, tegen de wind, terug naar het clubhuis.

Baan is niet overdreven mooi of goed, maar het is wel een volwaardige 18 holes baan zonder zwakke holes. En laten we eerlijk zijn: Is het niet lekker om weer eens goed uit te halen met de driver! Is wel leuk om voor de afwisseling te spelen (naast alle bekende links courses).

En met een beetje googlen op internet speel je voor 20 pond op een championship course die in het verleden als qualifier voor The Open werd gebruikt.
