Ullna Golf & Country Club

Ullna G&CC you are incredible! Real talk, you can play a lot of courses across europe but i think you won‘t find a hand full of courses in this conditions. The Tee boxes are better than greens on other courses! The Nicklaus design is absolutely great! very slopy greens and the layput with water an evaluated greens shows you, that a course with ca. 5700 meters can be very tricky! The only thing that is not perfect, that there is no driving range, just a net. But that has nothing to do with the course an the friendly people. I cant not understand how others criticies some points!

Bij aankomst krijg je mooi zakje met pitchfork, potlood en marker. Schitterende baan! Elke hole is met recht een uitdaging om te spelen. Je moet alle zeilen bij zetten om een goede score te halen. Zeer goed onderhouden baan met enkele schitterende holes. De fairway lijkt op glooiende vloerbedekking. Top! Greens zijn voor ons Nederlanders te snel (net als toen we bij Bro Hoft Slott speelden). Putten als een pro hier. Groot minpunt - gezien de prijs (circa stevige 225 euro) - is het ontbreken van een drivingrange en het feit dat hole 11 en 12 langs snelweg liggen. Lunchvoucher is inbegrepen bij de prijs (circa 17 euro). Vraag ernaar (ze waren m bij ons eerst vergeten). Je kunt m na afloop gebruiken of in het halfwayrestaurantje. Wij kozen daar voor de voucher een broodje koffie chocobonbon en smoothie; prima geregeld maar ook dat mag wel voor die prijs. Al met al een aanrader als je t geld kunt missen.

Though Ullna was only built in the early 1980s, it feels more established on and off the course. Its impressive pro shop and restaurant offer a delightful experience. We enjoyed the traditional Swedish dish of Kolbulle, an unlikely but delicious mix of bacon, pancake, and lingonberries. The speed of the putts on the practice green thereafter served as an early warning of the task ahead. Members at Ullna consider it to be Sweden's greatest challenge and boast the best conditioning. On a windy day when it had rained heavily, it soon became easy to see why. The "wow factor" becomes obvious as early as the third, a stunning par-three to an island green. I feared the worst as our two Swedish hosts found the pond before the green. I, however, clubbed up and saw my ball cling to the bank. Two putts later, I tapped in for a very pleasing par. Water is an omnipresent danger from then on, whether off the tee, on approaches to the green, or often both. My champagne moment came on the par-three fifth – 200 yards over water, against the wind, into a green defended by a sand trap. I have no shame in admitting I took driver because the ball shaved the hole and rested about ten feet away. I was thrilled to sink the downhill follow-up. There's no let-up on the back nine, with the 10th arguably the toughest hole on the course. This par-four has a brook in front of the tee and a fairway that feeds left between trees on either side, with bunkers down the right. Another brook forces strategic decisions before a steep rise to a green with a run-off to the right. The 16th – a majestic par-three with the seemingly infinite lake to the left and a sliver of land next to a tree on the right, beside the green's false front. It's followed by the stroke index one, which demands a hair-raising drive over water and inside trees on the right. The flag is on a peninsula with the lake on the left and a run-off to a "valley of sin" on the other side. After flushing my drive on the 18th, I found the bunker in front of a tiered green. I was thrilled to clip the ball about 15 feet beyond the flag and plonked my downhill par-putt into the hole. To stand on the same green as Jack Nicklaus had done when he restored the course was a privilege enough, but to round off this great course with a par was a rare delight.

Ullna Een last minute besluit met beperkte tijd bracht mij naar Ullna. Een golfbaan waar waar je wel een hele dag kan rondlopen. Hoewel er veel meer mogelijkheden zijn dan alleen het spelen van de 18 holes kan ik hier helaas alleen over oordelen. Van tee tot green een baan die tot bijna in perfectie is onderhouden. De heuvelachtige baan aan de rond van het meer zorgde voor geweldige uitzichten tijdens de hele ronde. Als je niet alleen voor de beleving, maar ook voor de score gaat, dan is het handig om je te verdiepen in de lay-out van de baan. Bij een aantal afslagen die op de fairway eindigde bleek het schot toch minder goed dan gedacht. Bomen blokkeerde de toegang naar de green of vlag. Achteraf is het een kwestie van beter voorbereiden, maar ik vind het eerlijker als de fairway je ook echt een kans biedt. Goed om te weten is dat er bij de prijs van de greenfee o.a. een lunch is inbegrepen (met water, koffie en thee).

Sven Tumba, the Swedish Renaissance athlete founded the course in 1981. After 30 years, under the tutelage of Jack Nicklaus, major changes have taken place.

Iconic is the par 3, played to an island green. The greens from 3 to 6 and 16 and 17 are drawn out to the water's surface, forming a sort of peninsula (except for 3). It wasn't like that on the 17th hole. Until Lee Trevino showed up one day and Tumby asked "Why isn't that green surrounded by water"? And the next day he had already seen a digger in action. "It's a par 5 rather than a par 4, a local member advises us on 17. To stand even on a bogey requires a drive 160 yards across a lake, a second blind uphill and a third to hit a peninsular green. A great and difficult course.
