Golf & Country Club Gut Altentann

Ein top Platz, der die Bezeichnung "leading" aufgrund der Gestaltung und Einbettung von herausfordernden Spielbahnen in eine schöne Landschaft verdient! Der top Pflegezustand, trotz kompletter Sanierung der Bewässerung und Drainage ist bemerkenswert. Tolle Übungseinrichtungen, die allerdings für spieler ohne Cart zu weit entfernt vom Clubhaus liegen. Das Sekretariat samt Shop ist top und freundlich, lediglich das Personal im Restaurant muss sich hinsichtlich Freundlichkeit und Aufmerksaamkeit verbessern. Ein Wermutstropfen ist der hohe Preis.

Located just outside Salzburg in Henndorf am Wallersee, Golfclub Gut Altentann is one of Austria’s most prestigious and historically significant golf courses. Designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus, it was his first course in Europe, opened in 1989, and remains a benchmark for strategic, natural golf course architecture in the region. The course is a par-72 championship layout, stretching over 6,100 meters from the back tees and offering multiple tee options to accommodate all skill levels. Characterized by generous fairways, well-placed bunkers, and undulating greens, the course rewards thoughtful shot placement and precision, especially on approach shots. Several water hazards come into play, adding both challenge and aesthetic value. Altentann has hosted prestigious tournaments, including the Austrian Open (1990–1992), and in 2025 it will once again welcome professionals during the Austrian Alpine Open—a testament to its enduring quality. In preparation, the course has undergone updates to restore Nicklaus' original design vision, including a re-positioning of the 18th green and overall infrastructure upgrades. Facilities are excellent: the driving range includes 25 tees (6 covered), and there are multiple short-game areas including pitching, chipping, and putting greens. The clubhouse offers a well-stocked pro shop, restaurant, and electric car charging stations. However, visitor reviews occasionally mention that guest locker rooms and signage could be improved, and that course drainage can be an issue after heavy rain. The greenfees reflect the premium status of the club. While the quality of design and tournament heritage justifies the price on dry days, some players have expressed concerns about playability and maintenance in wet conditions. In summary, Golfclub Gut Altentann is a beautifully situated, architecturally refined course that should be high on any golfer’s list when visiting Austria. Gut Altentann was host of the Austrian Alpine Open last weekend. As a visitor of the event I didn't play but walked most of the course. The greens were in outstanding shape and they were tough to read for the pros. Length wise the course is quite short for the pros but the defense were truly the greens. I also liked that they didn't trick up the course a lot from normal play. The fairways had the same width and the rough wasn't too bad either. Der Leading Golf Club Altentann, liegt in ruhiger, schöner Salzburger Landschaft. Seit meinem letzten Besuch wurden die Bahnen gedreht, die Frontnine sind jetzt die früheren Backnine. Die ersten 9 Löcher führen durch das Salzburger Hügelland mit herrlichen Ausblicken und vorbei an Bächen und kleinen Teichen. Die nun hinteren 9 Bahnen sind um eine wunderschöne Wasserlandschaft angelegt. Mit den Höhepunkten 16 und 17 direkt entlang am See. Zahlreiche versteckte Bunker auf allen Spielbahnen fordern die Golferinnen und Golfer heraus. Der Sand in den Bunkern ist konsistent und gut zu spielen.

Der Pflegezustand der gesamten Anlage ist ausgezeichnet: Die Grüns sind schnell und spurtreu, die Fairways auch im Hochsommer grün und in Topform.

Empfang und der Starter sind sehr freundlich, man fühlt sich willkommen. Gastfreundlichkeit und gute Küche zeichnen auch das gemütliche Clubheim mit schöner Terrasse aus. Ein Platz, der landschaftlich, gestalterisch und spielerisch überzeugt und extrem Spaß macht!
