St Michael's Golf Club

St Michael’s was the big surprise of our trip, a real joy, even on a windy day which just added to the fun. The course is noticeably tighter than almost everywhere else we’ve played in Oz & asks you to hit accurate shots. Miss & you’re going to be properly punished. I can’t fully explain why but playing St M gave me slight vibes of playing at Ils Aux Cerfs & Belle Mare in Mauritius, which is a compliment indeed! I preferred the front 9, which we played as our back 9. An excellent routing with plenty of elevation changes & some wonderful ocean views. Holes 2, 4, 5, 6 & 9 are all exceptional, demanding something slightly different from the tee & into the greens. On the back loop, the 17th was my favourite hole. From the tee you play this par 5 over water, to a fairway rising up a hill. Crest the top & the hole suddenly reveals itself, with a green guarded left and right by long, snake-like bunkers that slither around the putting surface and visually squeeze your approach. Condition wise, the course was very good. Fairways, surrounds & bunkering were all in great nick & it felt like a place that’s well cared for. The one blot was the greens late in the afternoon. Whilst they rolled well, they had more unrepaired pitchmarks than I’ve seen for a long time. A real shame on such a classy setup, and hope it was just a one off & that members & green fee playing visitors alike normally take greater care. St Michael’s is not flashy, despite its stunning ocean views. It’s tough, characterful and demanding without being unfair & all the better for a bit of wind. Would play again in a heartbeat.

Great course to play. Challenging but not ridiculous. Lovely views I’d the ocean and will get a glimpse of whales breaching at the right time of the year.

Inmiddels twee keer op St Michaels gespeeld. Is m'n beste ervaring in Sydney tot nu toe en van de public courses in Sydney waarschijnlijk de beste baan. Design is uitstekend, met een mooie afwisseling tussen holes aan de oceaan (met prachtige uitzichten) en meer inland holes die ook erg goed zijn. Par-5 13e hole is mijn favoriet. Baan is uitdagend met verschillende blind shots.

Onderhoud van de baan is helemaal prima - goede fairways en simpelweg fantastische greens. Tee-boxes iets minder maar daaraan was volgens mij onderhoud bezig.

Als Sydney resident is de greenfee 125 dollar (ca. EUR 80). Dat is twee keer zoveel als de bekendere public courses Moore Park, The Coast en Eastlake, maar wat mij betreft is het het helemaal waard om dat te betalen. Je krijgt er simpelweg een fantastische baan voor terug die zeker meer dan twee keer zo goed als de publieke banen (en ook niet zo "fabriekerig" is). Aankomst bij het clubhuis met uitzicht over de oefengreens en de zee is een heerlijke binnenkomer.

Ontvangst erg hartelijk en er is een driving range - geen vanzelfsprekendheid in Australie. Helaas geen drivers toegestaan op de range.

Ik ga hier zeker nog verschillende keren spelen.

Op verschillende manieren (email, formulier op de site) heb ik geprobeerd een starttijd te regelen. De enige reactie die ik heb ontvangen is het automatisch gegenereerde antwoord dat ik binnenkort antwoord zal krijgen. Het is inmiddels een maand verder en nog steeds geen andere reactie ontvangen. Andere golfclubs in Australië pakken dit gelukkig beter aan. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik niet welkom ben bij deze golfclub en ga dus maar op zoek naar een andere golfbaan in de buurt van Sydney.

Een mooie baan die zijn uitdagingen heeft op verschillende holes. Maar zeker speelbaar voor alle niveau’s. Regelmatige blindshots zorgen er wel voor de eerste keer je de baan speelt je het gevoel hebt je wel wat shots beter had kunnen doen. Maar zeker de moeite waard om deze baan te spelen!
