Killermont - Glasgow Golf Club

Our Centenary Scotland trip (playing 6 100+ years old courses in a week) began on April 17th, and while the weather was far from ideal, the arrival at Glasgow Golf Club immediately lifted the mood. Pulling up to the clubhouse, you are struck by its classical elegance. It is a truly beautiful building, and knowing that the club is among the oldest in the world only adds to the sense of occasion. Established in 1787, two years before the French Revolution, it is remarkable to reflect on the history embedded in this place. Even more impressive is that the clubhouse was rebuilt after a fire around eight years ago, and has been done so with great care and quality. The pro shop, located to the left of the first tee, is well-stocked and features a particularly strong club logo, something that stands out immediately. The course begins gently with a short par four opening hole where positioning on the right side sets up a straightforward wedge approach. The second hole provides a sharp contrast, a demanding par three of around 200 meters, with a green tucked behind a large tree on the left. Finding the green here felt like a real achievement. Overall, the course strikes an interesting balance. It is very playable and not overly punishing, with few opportunities to lose a ball, yet scoring is far from straightforward. Making pars and birdies still requires precision, which gives the layout a well-judged equilibrium. During the round, we encountered heavy rain and paused briefly, but this did little to detract from the experience. The 17th hole is particularly memorable, with a tee shot played across a road where traffic must stop while you hit, a charming and slightly surreal feature that hints at the course’s historic origins. One can easily imagine the layout being shorter in its early days. Back at the clubhouse, the experience continued on a high note. The members’ areas are spacious, and from the upper floor there are excellent views. The staff was welcoming and attentive, and the food was of very good quality. A particularly appealing aspect of the club is that members also have access to a second course on the Ayrshire coast, about 30 minutes away, which adds another dimension to the offering. We will be playing there shortly, but as a starting point for the trip, this was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable round.

If you want to play here, you need an invitation from one of the members. We were so lucky to get invited by Matt & David, two very friendly and funny guys. The club itself is the 10th oldest club in the world and it breathes history. The clubhouse is impressive although a part was destroyed by a fire some years ago. They managed to remain on ‘old feel’ to it. We played the course on a rainy day in April, so nothing out of the ordinary. It’s Scotland. Despite coming out of the winter the fairways and greens were already pretty lush. I can imagine that when the trees have leaves this course can be more tricky. Now it was pretty open and not too challenging. Just a really nice course. It reminded me a bit of Brunsfield. There was some minor works going on (drainage), so one hole was a bit shorter than usual. Greens when mowed a bit shorter certainly can be tricky and fast. Nice dressingroom, only drawback was that the toilets and sinks were in a different section (through two doors). The club offers nice food and the staff was really friendly 👍🏻. If you are able to play here, do so! And make sure to play it’s ‘sister’ course Gailes Links. Totally different but really nice to play as well.

A very traditional club and course packed into a compact location. Highlights are the imposing clubhouse and the beautiful trees and rhododendrons throughout the course. Course itself is short but beautifully maintained with pure greens.

Campo plano y fácil de jugar. En unas condiciones estupendas. Casa club increíble. Muy recomendable jugarlo, sobre todo con un socio para facilitar el acceso al mismo.
