About St. Pierre Marriott Hotel & Country Club

St Pierre of Caen was one of William the Conqueror's most faithful lieutenants and his reward was a domain overlooking the Severn Estuary which became the site of a 14th century manor house. It was here that King Henry V, who came from nearby Monmouth, stored the Crown Jewels while he defeated the French at Agincourt. The house and an adjacent church form the heart of the Mariott St Pierre hotel and around it two courses were created. The first was designed by Ken Cotton in 1961 from a deer park thronged with highly prized trees that dominate the scene and subdue most of those trying to thread their way through. The most brazen is the giant chestnut that rules the second fairway but even its victims tend to be calmed by the fact that it has been there since 1600. St Pierre has hosted the Dunlop Masters and the Curtis Cup and in 1996 staged the Solheim Cup between the USA and Europe. The course has seen many improvements recently. Professionals and amateurs alike find the par three 18th across a lake and uphill towards the ancient chimneystacks both daunting and memorable.

Der Old Course list ein sehr schöner Parkland Course. Wunderschöner alter Baumbestand. Breite Fairways. Infolge Regen etwas langsame Greens.

Freundlicher Empfang. Preis/Leistung top.

It had been years since I last set foot on the hallowed grounds of the old St. Pierre course, so when the opportunity arose for a work event, I eagerly seized it. Our tee time wasn't until 3 p.m., and as we teed off, the tranquility of the course enveloped us, with only our group breaking the silence. The memory of the towering oaks lining the fairways hadn't faded, but their grandeur seemed even more imposing now, casting long shadows over the greens.

Amidst the serenity, the course still boasted its signature holes, each offering its own challenge and allure. The par 3 18th, with its daunting water hazard and elevated green framed by the clubhouse, evoked a familiar rush of nerves. And the vistas from the fifth green and sixth tee box, showcasing the sweeping expanse of the Severn Valley and its iconic suspension bridges, remained as breathtaking as ever.

However, as I navigated the course, it became evident that time had taken its toll on St. Pierre's once impeccable condition. The unruly grass on the tee boxes posed an unexpected challenge, forcing me to adapt my approach mid-game. And the once strategic layout now found itself overshadowed by the encroaching trees, requiring detours rather than calculated shots on holes like the second and 14th.

Despite these signs of neglect, Cotton's original vision still lingered in the air, a testament to the course's enduring legacy. With proper maintenance and thoughtful management, St. Pierre has the potential to reclaim its former glory. Addressing the greens, managing the rough, and selectively pruning the overgrown trees could revitalize the course, returning it to its rightful place among the premium golfing destinations.

We played in the Autumn and there was placing on the course. The course was in good condition bearing in mind the time of year and the definition of tees and fairways was generally good. There are some excellent holes on the course and the scenery is good with mature trees and shrubs in evidence on the 18 holes. The final hole is the signature hole which brings an exciting end to the round. The clubhouse is very well presented with a friendly bar. Practice facilities are good and handy for the 1st tee, The pro shop is large and well presented.

Challenge yourself at a championship course that has hosted the Solheim Cup and many other European tournaments - boasting six past Ryder Cup Captains as champions. Ken Cotton designed the original Old Course in 1961. European Golf Design architect Ross McMurray extensively remodeled it in 2008 with new tee complexes, reconstructed bunkers and a testing dogleg par 5 on the 7th hole. - Designed around an 11-acre lake lined with century-old trees - a beautiful test of skill - 400 year-old chestnut tree awaits your play on the second fairway - Signature hole is the 18th, requiring a precision shot 235 yards across the lake's edge to a raised green
