About Crail Golfing Society

The old Balcomie Links in the old burgh of Crail near St Andrews is one of Scotland's finest golfing treasures. There is great antiquity here. The Crail Golfing Society was founded in 1786, at a time when there were only six other golf clubs in existence anywhere in the world. Set in an exposed corner on the most easterly point of the Kingdom of Fife on a promontory known as Fife Ness, the present course remains much as it did after Old Tom Morris from St Andrews laid out the first nine holes in 1895 and then added a second nine four years later. Balcomie has many admirers from all over the world and when the Open Championship is at St Andrews it is not unusual to see the famous faces of the game's greatest players taking on this delightful little golf course.

Centuries of golf has been played over these beautiful old links; long before the days of formal rules, mechanised mowers and metal cups. Much of the course as it is enjoyed today was laid out in 1895 by the master himself, Old Tom Morris. Balcomie is one of Scotland's golfing gems, it's a must-play course for members and visitors alike. Much of the course as it is played today was down to the masterful eye of a true legend of the game, Old Tom Morris. Open Champion, father of Young Tom, and "Grandfather of Golf", Old Tom laid out the first 9 holes in 1895 and extended the course to 18 holes in 1900. Crail Golfing Society and the Balcomie Links is just a small part the landscape and history of the East Neuk. The old lifeboat shed of 1884 still stands today and is a proud landmark across the course. The first hole of Balcomie is named after it.

It is no accident that members play Craighead as much as our old course. The course is a very different challenge to the links of Balcomie, but no less memorable. Gil Hanse, the acclaimed American architect designed the course to be at one with the clifftop environment and ancient medieval walls. At full-length Craighead Links has hosted national and international championships. From expertly placed tee boxes, golfers of all levels play spectacular holes surrounded by breathtaking coastal views.
