We hebben zowel the Old course als Strand gespeeld. We waren zeer vriendelijk welkom geheten.

The front 9 on the Strand course is right up there with anything I've ever played - there, I've said it! The holes run between huge dunescapes and are truly spectacular, the best comparison I can think of is the Wild Atlantic Dunes at Carne. There is no point highlighting any particular hole - they're all memorable! The back 9 however is much less interesting on relatively flat land. There is currently some shaping work being done to add dunes and definition to a number of holes, which will improve things. So, a real "game of 2 halves".

It's also worth noting the pace of play was terrible. We were out behind a Press Association outing, and it took us 5 1/2 hours to get round, despite there being a ranger on the course. His response to our comments about slow play was "there are a lot of groups and they're slow". I know - your job is to speed them up! A number of our party walked off after 9, having taken the same amount of time we take for 18 holes in the Scottish Winter.. The rest of us played a 6 ball and still waited on every shot on the back 9.... simply not acceptable.

I love Portstewart as a golf club, it has the prestige of one of the top courses in Northern Ireland but comes across as a course for the people. Everyone is super friendly, super helpful and on a day where myself and my friend were due to play Galgorm which was closed due to rain we turned our attention to the coast of Portstewart was our first option.

The PGA pro was very kind to find us a time on the Riverside course and as we’d played the Strand a year before (which you absolutely must play once in your lifetime) we figured the Riverside wasn’t a bad alternative.

It is, like second courses can be, a bit shorter at a par 68 but by no means any easier as there are plenty of streams, thick rough and even a marsh to hit over on a blind tee shot on the par 4 9th. Despite being stroke index 18, that blind tee shot can play havoc with your score on that hole. When the wind gets up it can be very challenging as like any links.

It still has some of the charm of the main course and at £35 quid a round I think is a pretty good option and definitely worth bolting on to your round if playing the Strand.

The Riverside

Course flag18 holes

The beautiful Riverside Course - a par 68 course - offers holes meandering along the banks of the River Bann. It's a great challenge and the Riverside Course is a perfect group/society course and for those who are not up for the mightiness of The Strand on any given day!

The Old Course

7.1

Course flag18 holes

The Old Course is where it all began in 1894 at Portstewart! The front 8 holes of The Old Course are perched along the rocky shore, east of Portstewart town on the Portmore Road heading to Portrush with the back 10 on the landward side.

The Strand

9.0

Course flag18 holes

The Strand Course is without doubt one of the very top true links golf courses in Ireland. The Strand Course was designed by Willie Park Jr and Des Giffin and features undulating dunes, run off bunkers, rolling fairways and tricky manicured greens. The views from almost every hole are quite simply, magical. The Atlantic is never very far away and the beauty of the course has to be seen to be believed.
