Westerham Golf Club

The hills are alive…with the sound of golfers. At some clubs, the graveyard slit on a Sunday afternoon is relatively quiet if you can get round before the sun goes down. Not at Westerham, at least when I visited. Things were so slow that we took the decision to replay the front nine instead of pushing on to the back. Green fees aren’t cheap, so it was a little surprising. In any event, this is a very nice course with lots of interesting holes up and down steep inclines and around several ponds and lakes. Lovely views from the more elevated tees. A friendly clubhouse and pro shop were also big pluses. Be patient and take a buggy if you struggle with steep hills!

Westerham Golf Club is the sort of place that describes itself as “a hidden gem” — which is true, if the gem in question is cubic zirconia set in a leatherette box. It gleams, it’s presentable, and from a distance, it looks the business. But scratch the surface, and you realise this is golf served with a side of function suite. Built in the late ’90s and groomed ever since for weddings, society days, and that bloke from accounts who still slices it 40 yards right despite the £999 TaylorMade fitting, Westerham is very much part of the “modern golf experience.” Which means decent coffee, big car parks, and a restaurant that offers more panini than philosophy. The course itself? It’s… fine. Perfectly pleasant. Green. Grassy. Possibly designed by a committee of marketing managers. The opening holes lull you into a false sense of security — sweeping fairways, neatly raked bunkers, and the kind of tree planting that says “we’ll look fantastic in 2040.” But beware the back nine, where things tighten up like a budget airline seatbelt, and suddenly you're chipping out sideways from a plantation of saplings that, on paper, were meant to “frame the hole.” There are water features — plural — because of course there are. And most of them are strategically placed just where your slightly nervous hybrid tends to land. It’s not links. It’s not heathland. It’s parkland with delusions of Augusta, all immaculately mown and, at times, suspiciously spongey underfoot. The clubhouse is enormous — part country hotel, part corporate training centre. There’s a bar that does brisk trade in Peronis and post-round wedding guests, and a pro shop that sells everything from rangefinders to bridal emergency kits, probably. The staff are lovely. The service is sharp. But make no mistake — Westerham knows which side its ciabatta is buttered. Golf is the main event, sure, but events are the main income. And yet… there’s something about it. The conditioning is solid. The welcome is genuine. The greens roll well enough, and if you squint past the next society fourball teeing off in novelty trousers, it can all feel almost serene. Westerham isn’t trying to be The Berkshire. It’s trying to be the best value-for-money round within 40 minutes of the M25 with a bacon bap and a chance to say you “went for it in two.” And honestly? It succeeds. Just don’t expect Colt. Expect Costa.

Onze eerste baan van een week in Engeland! Na pech onderweg nog net op tijd aangekomen. In de Pro shop werden we vriendelijk ontvangen en we konden zo door naar de eerste tee. Daar liet een vierbal ons direct door, al had dat niet veel zin want daarvoor liep een society voor ons met hackers die de ballen alle kanten op sloegen, dus dat werd een lange ronde... Dan de baan: een prima baan om de week mee te beginnen! Brede licht golvende fairways (niet breed genoeg voor de mensen om ons heen...) van goede kwaliteit, grote greens die mooi rolden. De holes zijn niet al te lang, uphill par 3's zijn kort, downhill zijn ze een stuk langer. Af en toe mooie uitzichten. De tweede negen heeft wat meer bijzondere holes, maar vooral 9 en 18 zijn visueel fraai: downhill par 4's richting het clubhuis met telkens water voor de green. Al met al een degelijke baan voor een prima prijs (£ 45 als loyalty guest na 3 uur in het weekend).

Westerham Golf Club was de laatste baan van onze trip. Wij arriveerden om 07:30 en konden (gelukkig) al ontbijten in het clubhuis.

De proshop was wederom klein en lekker vol. De ontvangst was gastvrij.

De oefenfaciliteiten zijn goed. Je kunt prima afslaan van de matten en er is een short game area waar je je slagen kunt oefenen.

Hole 1 is een niet al te lange par 4. Een prima hole om de ronde mee te beginnen. De wind was aanwezig dus daar moesten wij echt rekening mee houden.

Het heuvelachtige landschap levert prachtige vergezichten op en maakt het spelletje wat gecompliceerder.

Het onderhoud was goed. Fairways waren goed, greens strak en de teeboxen keurig in een vierkant en kort gemaaid.

Hole 9 en hole 18 komen aan bij het clubhuis en doordat beide holes flink hoogteverval kennen, levert dat prachtige beelden op.

Er staat een plaquette bij de teebox van 18 waarop staat dat de oprichter van Westerham, Ron Noades als laatste wens had dat zijn as op de baan uitgestrooid werd. Dat is gebeurd op precies 150 yards van de green.

De baan is heerlijk om te spelen en heeft een prima prijs-/kwaliteitverhouding. Een aanrader.

Bij Westerham Golf Club klopt heel veel. Een eerste positieve ervaring maakte ik met de manager via de mail bij het boeken van de baan in januari. Hij dacht me nog te moeten overtuigen om te komen spelen en stuurde mij een hoop foto's en uitleg over aanpassingen aan de baan die ze onlangs hebben gerealiseerd. Door de Greenfee's vooraf te voldoen, stond de boeking vast voor half 9 's ochtends op een "Bank-Holiday". Dit is behoorlijk gastvrij daar de meeste golf clubs, gasten pas na de middag toestaan op zulke dagen.

We hebben ons bij de proshop aangemeld en kregen hier nog even netjes uitleg over trainingsfaciliteiten en andere good-to-know's. De keuken van het clubhuis was nog niet open om half 8, we konden al wel terecht voor koffie en voorverpakte broodjes.

De baan is een genot, mooie lay-out, veel afwisselende holes en hele korte loopwegen van green naar hole. Hole 9 en 18 speel je - zoals het hoort - richting en met uitzicht op het clubhuis. De baan biedt veel uitdaging met bunkers, slopes en water. De baan is mede door zijn perfect aangelegde paden (op de back-nine nog niet allemaal af) prima te belopen met een trolley.

Bij de volgende Engeland-trip willen in de buurt van deze baan verblijven en ook op deze baan starten als dat dan mogelijk is. Het is goed toeven op het terras waar je een heel mooi zicht hebt op de prachtige greens van de uitdagende holes. De "pints" zijn wel wat aan de prijzige kant al doet dat geen afbreuk aan geweldige golfochtend.
