Silloth on Solway Golf Club

In het uiterste noordoosten van Engeland, aan de Ierse zee, ligt Silloth on Solway Golf Club. De baan is in 1892 aangelegd naar een ontwerp van David Grant. In de loop van de jaren zijn er ook bijdragen geweest van illustere ontwerpers Willie Parker Jr. en Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Bij het clubhuis aangekomen melden wij ons aan in de proshop. Althans, dat was het plan. Aanmelden hoeven wij namelijk niet aangezien Roy in de proshop ons direct al herkent als de Nederlanders die om 13:30 starten. Wij worden door hem zeer hartelijk welkom geheten en uiteraard bevraagd over de banen die wij al gespeeld hebben. Na onze opsomming van toch niet de minste banen zegt hij vol vertrouwen dat wij het een fantastische baan gaan vinden. Zoveel zelfvertrouwen kan twee dingen betekenen: of hij is zo trots op zijn baan dat hij de werkelijkheid een beetje uit het oog is verloren of het is écht een hele goede baan. Wij eten eerst nog wat in het clubhuis. Het clubhuis staat er al even en het past helemaal bij zijn functie. Een beetje gedateerd maar met karakter. Er zijn netten om warm te slaan, een oefenhoek waar je kunt chippen en twee oefengreens. Na een paar ballen in het net en wat putten gaan wij afslaan. Het ontwerp is klassiek dus eerst 9 holes ‘out’ en dan 9 holes ‘in’. De wind is op de eerste 9 holes tegen, op hole 4 na. Daarna heb je wind mee. We beginnen met een par 4 van 340m van wit. Dat is 340 meter zonder wind. Met wind voelt hij als 440 meter. De fairway is niet bovengemiddeld smal en toch weet ik hem niet te vinden. Ik heb de wind duidelijk nog niet onder controle. Helaas heeft mijn matchplay tegenstander dat wel en een par van haar zijde levert direct een achterstand op. Ondanks het feit dat ik niet scoor levert deze eerste hole mij een grote lach op mijn gezicht op. Dit is linksgolf in optima forma. Bij de afslag zie je een mooie fairway, geflankeerd door duingrassen, heide en gorse. Een green die achter een heuvel ligt, dus een blinde approach met alle mogelijke gevolgen van dien. Een green die snel en eerlijk is en had ik de wind al genoemd? De ene prachtige hole na de andere ontrolt zich voor onze ogen. Hole 9 is een bijzondere vermelding waard. De hole is niet lang, de green ligt lager dan de tee dus op zich zou het een makkelijke hole moeten zijn. Niets is minder waar. Spelend in de wind moet je schot ontzettend zuiver zijn om op de green te komen en te blijven. Lig je er niet op dan is de kans op een bunkerschot of een schot uit het duingras groot. De bunkers zijn sowieso het benoemen waard. Deze zijn namelijk ontzettend goed onderhouden, diep en veelal verborgen. De hand van Dr. MacKenzie is hierin duidelijk zichtbaar. De tweede 9 holes zijn met de wind mee inderdaad makkelijker. Je bal legt makkelijker veel meer afstand af. Clubkeuze is hierdoor erg belangrijk. De holes blijven prachtig, het uitzicht wordt iets minder. Achter het clubhuis ligt namelijk een dok met een grote hal erachter. Het dok was ooit de bron van het ontstaan van de club maar het is niet heel mooi. Ook staan bij de afsluitende holes aan de rechterkant een aantal huizen die de schoonheid van de baan niet helemaal representeren. Maar om heel eerlijk te zijn compenseert de schoonheid van de baan dit ruimschoots. Roy van de proshop is niet verblind, Silloth on Solway heeft zich gepresenteerd als prachtige baan die met gemak de strijd aan kan met heel veel beroemde banen. Als de ligging iets meer op de route zou zijn, zou de baan hoog in alle ranglijsten staan.

One of the top courses on the west coast of England. There is a practice net and a small putting green right next to the pro shop, where you are warned about blind holes and four places where a public road crosses the course and pedestrians have right of way. There is a lot of heathland between the fairways and around the greens. Blind shots and hidden greens can cause trouble at first. The par 3s, numbers 6, 9, and 16, are especially great. The last 6 holes are a tough test of golf, with half of the holes being par 5s! A great course.

If you’re the sort of golfer who enjoys firm turf, the challenge of wind & using imagination rather than a rangefinder, then Silloth is your place. It’s raw, natural, strategic & a brilliant links, the way golf should be. The routing is clever, weaving through the dunes with holes constantly shifting direction to let the wind test you fully. There’s charm in the club & soul in the course from start to finish. One of the best-value top-100 courses you can play & one of the most memorable too. After a couple of aborted attempts to get here, I was thrilled to eventually get to play with my good friend and it won’t be long until I’m pestering him for a return visit.

This is my second time playing at Silloth, and while I have fantastic memories from my first visit, this round was even better. The greens were fast and true, and though it was windy, the rain stayed away, offering spectacular views of the nearby Cumbrian mountains in the Lake District. Across the Solway, the peaks behind Southerness loomed large. The course rewards thoughtful, strategic play—anyone thinking they can just bomb a driver around will be in for a surprise. The staff in the clubhouse and pro shop were friendly, welcoming, and eager to chat. The food was excellent, and with the stunning views of the 1st and 18th holes, it's a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a meal after your round. I’ll definitely be back again.

Silloth is an excellent course to play if you are in the area. If you are golfing in Cumbria it should be one of the courses you visit.

Being a links course, the weather plays a big factor in the difficulty of the course. I played most of the front 9 with a couple of members (I joined them on the 3rd hole as the 3-ball in front of them was refusing to let them through) and had a very enjoyable time. They decided to skip holes 10-13 as they had to be in by a certain time. The weather turned on me on the back nine with a couple of showers and some very strong winds (I hit a 9 iron over 200 yards with the wind and then a well hit drive only went 140 yards into the wind). The wind, coupled with the 3 ball in front still refusing to let me through, made the back nine feel like a slog. That being said there were some very enjoyable holes.

The course is an out and back layout and the holes are well defined by the surrounding dunes. The routing is such that you rarely see2112 other fairways from the one that you are playing meaning that each hole is a new surprise when you reach the tee box. There are a couple of blind shots into greens and on these holes there is a diagram on the tee box showing you the flag location of the day.

From the 1 November, fairway mats are mandatory but this is reflected in a much reduced green fee (£55 down from the normal £95). At £55 it is great value for money and I would be happy to play the full green fee to play here out of the winter season.
