Swinley Forest Golf Club

Swinley is one of the great days out in golf. it has a reputation as exclusive, sleepy and old fashioned. That is however all part of the charm. It's only relatively recently that the club has opened up to visitors a couple of days a week and the experience is top notch. The sense of history and tranquility is palpable. The golf course is an absolute gem and the carvery lunch reminiscent of the likes of Muirfield and Royal St Georges.

The course is fairly short, at 6,400 yards of the back tees, but with a par of 69 is a tough test. The par 3s are superb - particularly the 4th and 10th. There are also some great long par 4s that would be at home on any of the absolutely top heathland courses. The 7th is played uphill over a cross bank of heather at about 250 off the tee meaning a fairway or hybrid off the tee is the sensible play. That then leaves a 200 yard second shot to a long thin green with gorse on the left and a steep bank on the right. The 9th is a glorious uphill left hand dog leg to a severely sloping green where par feels like a birdie. On the back 9 the 12th and 16th are the standout holes. If getting to the green on the 12th isn't hard enough, it has one of the most testing greens I've ever seen anywhere.

There isn't really a weak hole, and the vistas are spectacular. The walk up to the 18th green with the mock Elizabethan clubhouse as the backdrop must be one of the best views in golf, made all the better by knowing there's a lovely terrace to sit out on and have a couple of thirst quenching drinks whist contemplating the last 3 hours.

Thoroughly deserving of it's ranking - if you're luck enough to get the chance to experience Swinley, you absolutely must make it happen!

Heide, heide en nog eens heide. Deze baan is de hemel op aarde. De ene hole nog mooier dan de andere en wat een rust. We speelden 27 holes (3e negen voor niets) en verlieten om 17:30 de baan zo ongeveer als laatste. Ontvangst prima, heerlijk ontbijt op het terras, met prachtig uitzicht op hole 1 en 18. Drivingrange aanwezig en dichtbij.

Afrekenen greenfee is hier aan de bar ipv de proshop. Hole,2,4,5,12 zijn wel mijn favourieten. Hole 18 helaas niet een echte 18e hole passend bij deze topbaan, maar wel een hole waar menig baan jaloers op zou zijn. Greens kunnen net wat beter, maar dit wordt meer dan genoeg gecompenseerd door de rest vd baan. Als je een keer in de mogelijkheid bent om deze baan te spelen, moet je dat zeker doen. Een unieke ervaring.

I played in a charity golf day at Swinley Forest so was fortunate to play foursomes in the morning and a four ball in the afternoon with lunch in between.. The course and the hospitality were exceptional. It is not an overly long course, but the heather and bunkers make it a real test. I would highly recommend this course and would certainly put it as 1 of my top 3 played.

Swinley Forest, oh lovely Swinley Forest! Je kunt er hele gedichten over schrijven, maar laat ik me tot een review beperken nu.

Al jaren is het mijn droom om in de bloeiperiode op Engelse heidebanen te spelen en nu is het zo ver. Na 5 heideloze banen op vrijdag en in het weekend kan vandaag het echte feest van start, te beginnen met Swinley Forest. Na het passeren van het elektrische hek komen we aan op een toch wel behoorlijk vol parkeerterrein, dat hadden we niet verwacht. Het clubhuis ziet er uitnodigend uit en via de pro shop met een uiterst vriendelijke jongeman arriveren we in de bar waar we ons mogen registreren in een half uit elkaar gevallen boek en mogen we de greenfee afrekenen (20 pond minder dan gedacht, meevallertje!). We mogen gratis koffie uit de automaat halen en dan 20 minuten op het terras naar de baan staren, wow! Een prachtig uitzicht op hole 1 en 18. Op naar de eerste tee. Een brede fairway strekt zich voor ons uit en we weten allebei de fairway te vinden. We zijn begonnen! En wat een heide om ons heen! Ik was bang dat we iets te vroeg in het seizoen zouden zijn, maar het lijkt er zelfs op dat sommige heide al over het hoogtepunt heen is, al staat de meeste paarse hei nog prachtig in bloei, dus we komen helemaal aan onze trekken. En de baan is werkelijk heerlijk om te spelen. Geen spektakel holes of heroïsche holes maar gewoon hele fijne holes met prachtige greensites. Vooral de par 3's zijn pareltjes, al zijn de 2 par 5's ook bijzonder. Er zit een prachtige flow in het terrein en de fairways zijn soms met allerlei subtiele glooiingen gemaakt om je stance te beïnvloeden. Ook de routing is zodanig dat je zonder bordjes de volgende hole makkelijk kan vinden. Na 3 holes stuiten we op onze voorgangers en de flight daarvoor kunnen we ook zien en wat blijkt: het is een hondenparadijs hier! We zien bijna geen flight zonder hond, overal drinkbakken op de baan en hondenbrokken bij het halfway house, heel bijzonder. De snelheid is er wel uit nu, maar die tijd gebruiken we om de ene na de andere foto te schieten, no problem at all!

Na deze lofzang toch nog enige kritische puntjes: de kwaliteit van de greens is matig. Op banen waar je nog geen kwart van de prijs betaalt waren de greens uitmuntend, maar hier zijn de greens onregelmatig, alsof er al dagen niet is gemaaid. De snelheid is overigens wel voldoende. Ook de bunkers liggen er zeer onverzorgd bij: hard en soms zelfs modderig, dat hoort niet bij zo'n topbaan. Verder is soms het verkeersgeluid wat te uitdrukkelijk aanwezig, dat verstoort de idylle enigszins.

Maar verder is mijn droom helemaal uitgekomen en we hebben nog 3 (top)heidebanen te gaan!

Swinley Forest is Harry Colt's 'least bad design' as he was quoted once. This heathland course with beautiful strategic holes is not exceptionally long but still nice and challenging. As often with Colt designs the par 3's are amazing!

The clubhouse looks like a mansion overlooking the 1st,18th and a nice putting green. The staff in there were super friendly and they make a wicket Gunners. (nice refreshing drink great on a hot summer day after golf)

The start on the 1st, under the iconic trees from their logo is quite okay, also on the front nine I kept most of my drives in the fairway getting a feeling that this course was not so difficult. Made 4 pars in a row from 3-6 and really enjoying myself. On the back nine I encountered the teeth of the course, as soon as you miss the fairway you can be in triple and quadruple bogey country. So 19 points on the front and 13 on the back nine, playing by myself and a course guide, not to bad for a bogey player.

I can recommend everyone who gets a chance to play here to go for it. The only thing i regret is that I did not know that your green fee here is for the day... so next time will come early and try to get two rounds in (and enjoy the famous lunch...).
