Fairwood Park Golf Club
Over Fairwood Park Golf Club
Fairwood Park is the only Championship-status course within the City and County of Swansea. Believe it or not, during the Second World War there used to be a secret RAF hospital on the site of Fairwood Park's clubhouse acting as a refuge for the sick and wounded. Today's golfer however, will find no such respite on this jewel of a course situated deep within the Gower peninsula. For although it may be a flat course, Fairwood Park is one of the most challenging on Gower, and at 6,700 yards it is certainly the longest. Ultimately it's the bewildering array of trees lining each fairway that make Fairwood a first class parkland course and it's also these very same trees that continually lie in wait, ready to punish the wayward golfer. Add a plethora of lakes and strategically placed bunkers into the equation and you'll begin to understand why so many visitors keep coming back to enjoy the delights of Fairwood Park. The Welsh PGA was one such group that decided to return, as Fairwood Park was twice chosen to host the Welsh Professional Golf Championships during the 1990s, and today the golf course remains the only one in Swansea to have ever hosted a PGA event. Such an accolade was little more than the club deserved given the remarkable amount of investment that has taken place on the golf course since it was founded in 1969, including the planting of 12,000 new trees, the creation of 5 man-made lakes, and the total redesign of 6 new greens. Most visitors who come to Fairwood Park are eager to share their golfing experiences with their friends and we're certain that you will too. Just don't tell too many people about us, like the old RAF base, Fairwood Park still remains one of South Wales' best kept secrets. Secretary: Mr Don Giltrap.

The clubhouse of Fairwood Park is not appealing when you see it from the backside where you park your car. But once you get on the other side of the concrete building, you find a nice parkland course and an unpretentious club with a relaxed atmosphere. The reception is very friendly and easy going. The restaurant offers a basic but good menu with generous portions. The course has two sides: the first part is very flat and spacious and somewhat predictable. The second part, form hole 13 on offers much more variation and interesting holes and a strong finish. Hole 15, a beautiful bending par 4, and 16, a water-lined par 3, being the highlights. The parkland character provides it’s usual features: tree-lined fairways, ponds and bunkers. The greens are fair and well maintained. This provides a good playground to test your golfing skills.

Fairwood Park Golf Club (6,226 yards, par 73, and a slope of 115 from the yellow tees) is located just a few kilometres west of Swansea and is a member-heavy parkland course. Despite being close to the city, you quickly feel surrounded by greenery. Old trees, varied holes, and a pleasantly quiet atmosphere shape the course. The clubhouse, when arriving at the large parking lot, initially seems unremarkable, but it is well received by the members and yes, our little snack before the round was generous and above all very tasty. I really liked the welcome and briefing in the small pro shop. The course was in good condition. The greens, in particular, were true and well maintained. Fairwood Park is a classic parkland course that feels spacious but still demands precise play. Trees and strategically placed bunkers mean that good course management is usually more important than sheer length. I especially enjoyed the back nine, which is noticeably more varied. My personal signature hole is the 16th – a short par 3 with water in front of the green. On paper, the hole seems harmless, but the shot demands full concentration. Precisely because the hole isn’t long, the temptation to take it too lightly is high – a mistake that can quickly be punished with a ball in the water. Type: Parkland Difficulty: medium Reward factor: precise iron shots Blind shots: few Hazards: old trees, water on select holes, strategic bunkers, and undulating greens Tip: Stay patient and rather focus on a good position on the fairway – the course rewards thoughtful play. Replay factor: gladly

Day 4, course 6 of my Wales golf experience. After morning round we knew that afternoon golf will hardly beat it, and yes it did not. So we arrived to Fairwood park without expectation just eager to play another round. Big parking lot not a fancy clubhouse, however very friendly atmosphere and nice hospitality. We hit the course right away, course is prety easy to walt no hight elevetion at all. Its parkladn course. Holes on fron nine are just simple, with no hard obstacles. Front nine has nice finishing hole close to clubhouse. Back nine is more fun and brings more challenging shots into the play. Particulary I would highlight hole number 15th what I would say is signature hole. So overall Fairwood is good course and with great hospitality and worth every penny to visit.
