The North is an absolute showstopper. Visually outrageous & insanely well conditioned (I stood on the practice green for a good 10 mins trying to work out if it was real or artificial grass!). PK North grabs you from the opening hole & just doesn’t let go. Everything looks pristine but underneath the shine sits some seriously good architecture. Strategic decisions are everywhere. There’s loads of width but advantage comes from angles not brute force & it’s very easy to rack up a big number if you switch off for a moment. The bunkering is big, bold, beautifully edged & constantly in play, while the greens are superb. Firm, fast, full of movement & demanding proper thought. This is elite modern golf done properly & it’s a total joy from start to finish. Tees blend into fairways & fairways bleed straight into greens. It may be sacrilege to say, especially having played Royal West the day before & just days after the Australian Open, but PK North was my personal sandbelt highlight. Not saying it’s better… just saying we had a ridiculous amount of fun. The South Course is a real beauty. Noticeably less bruising & definitely more playable than the North, with holes that let you swing the club a bit more freely. Fairways feel a touch wider & while you still need to think, you’re not constantly on trial. The bunkering is clever rather than cruel, framing holes without overcooking the punishment & turning every miss into a death sentence. Green complexes are interesting without being OTT & the variety keeps things fun from tee to green. It asks questions rather than issuing ultimatums. Miss in the right place & you’re still very much alive. Conditioning was superb. Big open views, sandy textures & a modern Melbourne heathland feel make it very easy on the eye & a pleasure to walk. From just 1 play of each, I preferred the North for pure theatre & its wow factor. But the South is the pick of both my friends who are members, which tells you plenty. I’d happily play both on repeat. Stunning, thoughtful & simply excellent. If the North is the flashy showstopper, the South is the course you’d take home to meet your parents.
