Welshpool Golf Club

Visited Welshpool on the 18th of July in 2025. To be short: absolute must visit. Superb views, massive moving fairways (both up/down as well as left/right), some tight small greens and some larger ones that ran very fair but not too fast. You absolutely want a cart/buggy as the massive differences in height will wear you out. Less points for the facilities as there’s just a net to warm up and the practice green is somewhat limited.

Deze golfbaan ligt net buiten Welshpool in de bergachtige heuvels. De uitzichten rondom zijn spectaculair. Het terrein is sterk geaccidenteerd. De fairways zijn hobbelig doordat de ondergrond van de heuvels hobbelig is. De greens zijn als een biljartlaken. Het is zeker aan te raden om een buggy te nemen. Onderweg kom je een aantal spectaculaire holes tegen. Hier wordt een beroep gedaan op je techniek. Na afloop kun je in het zeer eenvoudige clubhuis genieten van een heerlijke Guinness en iets eenvoudigs eten. De toegangsweg naar de golfclub is ook spectaculair. Eenbaans en sterk stijgend.

Deze baan is wel goed onderhouden, maar ... de fairways zijn erg grof gemaaid; het is hobbeldebobbel bij elke hole. Het is nog niet in optima forma voor het golfseizoen. Het is een enorm uitdagende baan met grote hoogteverschillen. Er is op vrijwel de meeste holes wel 20-30 m verval. Of de tee of de green ligt hoog of zelfs beide (met dan een diepe dip halverwege de hole)! Daarnaast zijn de fairways ondulerend of lopen juist links of rechts af naar beneden.. Het is op/af bij alle holes. Door de hoogteverschillen lijken de afstanden kort, maar dat valt tegen bij het slaan. Het uitzicht vanaf de toppen is fabuleus. De greens zijn goed onderhouden. De fairways op de eerste negen holes zijn wel OK; bij de tweede negen holes erg nat. Soms moeten we over hele velden onkruid of het pittige en prikkende gorse heenslaan! Al met al - een hele interessante baan. Een aanrader!

On top of the hills, with beautiful views, lies this very challenging course. Turns up and down, sometimes without seeing where your ball lands. Hard fairways with bouncing balls. You often cannot find a ball in the rough. When you come here for the first time, you have to pay very close attention to how the holes go, and sometimes look for the right way. Perhaps that's why you can buy a day ticket, so you can play the 18 holes again ;-).

Perched near impossibly on the top of a collection of hills, Welshpool is an interesting and challenging golf course. Steep, blind holes are interspersed pleasingly with some light-relief driveable par 4s. Maintenance is extremely good with fast, true greens and springy fairways. The views across Wales and England are simply spectacular. And all for £35. Don't miss out if you're in the area.
