Rye Golf Club

Getting onto the Rye GC course is a tough nut to crack. Aside from members, fewer than 100 golfers play at this private club each year. It’s entirely at the secretary’s discretion. The club also upholds its traditions: if you’re wearing shorts, you must wear knee-high socks (available for purchase in the pro shop). If you’d like to dine at the restaurant for lunch—which is a luxurious buffet—you must wear a dress shirt, tie, and jacket. During my visit, the temperature was 35 degrees Celsius, so an exception was made and gentlemen were not required to wear jackets. Nevertheless, some chose to wear them. The Jubilee Course is played as an 18-hole course, but only on 12 greens. The holes played on the 3 additional greens are holes 15–17. A nice hole on the front nine is No. 4, where the green is carved into a sand dune. The par-3 16th is also nice. If you’re lucky enough to visit Rye, play the Jubilee Course first and then have lunch. The main Old Course begins with the only par-5 hole. The first three holes are on flat ground. The fourth hole takes you to the top of a dune for the first time. The course, though short with a par of 68, is challenging on your first round. There are several blind shots where you have absolutely no idea where to aim. It’s a classic links course, with the only non-links-style hole being No. 11, which plays across a lake. Be careful on the final hole, a par 4. If you end up too far to the left on the fairway, your shot to the green may be blocked by part of the elongated clubhouse.

Rye is een golfclub (1894) naar een ontwerp van Harry Colt, een ‘private members only ‘ club.

Je hebt The Old Course 18 holes en The Jubilee Course 12 holes.

Na aanmelding in de Proshop (overzijde baan) en na ontvangst van een leuke goodie bag ga je naar overzijde om aan de bar de forse greenfee te betalen van 225£. Manager Joe heeft mij een rondleiding gegeven zowel binnen als buiten en vertelde mij dat ik waarschijnlijk eerder dan mijn starttijd van 11.00 zou kunnen vertrekken. Na gratis koffie of thee en een (betalende) bacon roll gebruikt gemaakt van putting green, driving range en chipping area.

Als je na 11.00 am de bar of restaurant betreedt wordt je geacht om ‘jacket and tie” te dragen. De recent vernieuwde locker rooms zijn voorzien van moderne toiletten en ruime douches.

Je start op hole 1 met de enige par 5. De baan lag er (gezien de hevige regenval) perfect bij : snelle (zomer)greens en mooie fairways. De baan zelf heeft voldoende afwisseling : blind shots, doglegs, lange par 3’s, verhoogde teeboxen enz.

De grote vraag blijft natuurlijk of de golfbaan de GF van 225£ waard is. Ik had toch het gevoel dat dit vooral een besloten club is : iedereen wel vriendelijk, maar niet hartelijk. Het is een linksbaan maar je ziet de Noordzee niet en visueel klopt het plaatje ook niet echt (door de aanwezigheid van windenergie molens aan de overzijde de lelijke industriële scheepswerf Rye Wharf.

Mijn persoonlijke voorkeur gaat eerder uit naar een baan zoals Prince’s en voor deze greenfee had ik in deze periode Royal ST George en Royal Cinque Ports kunnen spelen.

Toch de moeite en eentje die ik kan afvinken van mijn Engelse Bucket lijst.

Links puro en el sur de Inglaterra junto al Canal de la Mancha.

El campo se divide en las dos vueltas una a cada lado de la casa club y los hoyos son una buena mezcla de hoyos mayormente llanos y anchos con otros mas estrechos y con calles sinuosas y bacheadas.

Que la longitud en la tarjeta no te engañe ya que es par 68 y en realidad juega mucho mas largo de lo que puede parecer.

En la finca hay como una especie de cordillera de dunas que divide el campo en tres zonas: una a cada lado de las dunas y la zona mas divertida que juega entre las mismas.

Salidas en alto muy expuestas al viento pero que ofrecen unas vistas al hoyo espectaculares.

Golpes ciegos, greens movidos… lo tiene todo.

Los greens son una maravilla de movimiento y posibles banderas endiabladas. Muy rápidos hoy.

Una particularidad son los rastrillos situados siempre fuera de los bunkers y en posición vertical.

Creo que sirven para señalar do de están los mismos ya que la gran mayoría son invisibles desde la linea de juego.

Estos bunkers son en general muy pequeños y bastante profundos, todos muy naturales.

El club tiene varias particularidades en sus costumbres y códigos: generalmente se juegan 2 bolas en el partido (si sois 4 será foursome) salvo aceptación especial del secretario.

Si juegas con shorts lo deberás hacer con calcetines largos de forma obligatoria. Si no los tienes los puedes comprar en el proshop al otro lado de la carretera.

Para entrar en la casa club a partir de las 11:00 necesitas camisa, chaqueta y corbata.

Wat een geweldige golfbaan. en wat een sfeer. Een echte Harry Colt layout, zeer gevarieerd met holes die je na de ronde bij zullen blijven. De baan was echt in topconditie, strakke tees en greens. En dat half oktober. De lunch was heerlijk en de mensen vriendelijk. Als ik dan echt een paar minpuntjes zou moeten noemen: wat horizonvervuiling links en rechts. En er is maar 1 par-5.

Campo muy duro desde los tees traseros al ser Par 68 y realmente algunos Par 4 podrían ser Par 5. Precioso recorrido, los hoyos que cruzan las dunas son brutales,3,4,5 y dos mas en la segunda vuelta. Sorprendente el hoyo 17, Par 3 que tenía 233m a bandera y viento en contra. Precioso. La próxima vez jugaré desde tees amarillos! Hahaha. Y bonita playa al lado del campo!
