Woking Golf Club

Woking GC is a beautiful oasis of tranquility. Founded in 1893, it is nestled among pine forests. The fairways are lined with heather fields, and a small pond occasionally comes into play. Clumps of heather also line the upper edges of the bunkers in an almost eerie way. The entire course has a gentle slope. The fairways are mowed along the axis in two opposite directions, typical of courses in Surrey and Berkshire. The greens are sometimes as large as a tennis court, so three-putts are not uncommon. Watch out for the 14th hole, a par 5. If you play your final shot to the green well to the right, it will be a nerve-wracking shot. Behind the flat green is only a strip of closely mowed grass about 2 meters back from the green; right at the same level is a terrace full of people. Your shot will be heading straight toward them, so be careful. This par-70 course consistently ranks among the Top 100 courses in the UK & Ireland.

Woking Golf Club is one of England’s most historically significant heathland courses, designed by Tom Dunn in 1893 and famous for introducing the world’s first fairway bunkers on the 4th hole. The course is presented beautifully, with immaculate fairways, excellent bunkers, and quick, true greens. The bunkering is a particular highlight, adding strategy to almost every hole without feeling excessive. The standout hole is the stroke index 1 sixth. Played from an elevated tee with excellent views across the heathland, it demands a precise drive to avoid heather-lined bunkers before a delicate approach over a winding brook into a superb green complex. Facilities are excellent, with a historic clubhouse, a well-stocked pro shop, quality practice greens, warm-up nets beside the clubhouse, and a driving range located a short walk away between the 14th and 15th holes. The only slight criticism is that the opening tee shot doesn’t quite hint at what’s to come. Once past the 1st, however, Woking delivers one outstanding hole after another. An essential visit for anyone who appreciates classic heathland golf and golf course architecture.

Woking is fabulous! The Clubhouse is very traditional and understated - a throwback to the 1920s, but welcoming and has some great memorabilia on it's walls.

The course is stunning. It's easily the best of the famous "3 Ws". I thought it was on the same level as either of the 2 Sunningdale courses, which is high praise indeed. The greens are large and very challenging, offering a large variety of pin placements. They were only running at about 8 when I played, so were manageable. When cut down they would be truly scary in places. Heather and pine trees abound, and there are many subtle slopes and run offs which you only become aware of when you approach the greens.

Standout holes are the long par 3 2nd,3rd,12th (what a green!) 15th, short par 3 16th (a classic example of why a par 3 doesn't have to be 200 yards to be tough!) and 18th with a severely sloping green down to a lake on the right side of the green.

I can't pay Woking any greater praise than to say it's a course I could play every day and never tire of. It's brilliant!

De 4e dag van een trip golf in Surrey nu op deze 2-ball course only. Dit is wellicht leuk en fijn voor de leden en ook dit is weer een echte ledenbaan, maar als greenfeespeler voel je je toch wat opgejaagd.

De greenfee is zeker niet laag en het ontvangst is wat zakelijker dan op andere banen. Het waaide hard en het regende, dus we twijfelde nog, maar vanaf moment dat we starte, werd het droog.

De baan is prachtig en heel goed onderhouden. Prima te lopen met 1 keer een stevige klim. Baanboekje met de bunkers heb je hier ook zeker weer nodig. Hole 1, korte par4 en hierachter gelijk 1 van de mooiste holes van de baan, par3 hole 2.

Wederom hole 10 ook een par3 en op hole 11 heb je een prachtig uitzicht over groot deel van de baan. Hole 14 met veel heide aan rechterkant is de eerste par5 en de green ligt bijna tegen het clubhuis aan. Hole 15 de 2e par5, kent ook weer veel heide, zoals eigenlijk wel de gehele baan. Fairways zijn vrij breed.

Op het terras mag je niet enkel plaats nemen met gezicht naar green 14 en op eigen risico.

Een baan die je zeker een keer moet spelen als je er bent.
