Goring & Streatley is a mature parkland course dating back to 1895, designed by Tom Dunn. The layout offers a pleasant mix of tree-lined holes, attractive views across the Thames Valley, and a few significant elevation changes. The 17th hole is the highlight, a dramatic downhill par 5 that’s reachable in two for many golfers, while the par 3s are consistently enjoyable throughout the round. Course conditioning was very good, with excellent greens and fairways. A small number of bunkers could benefit from further attention, but overall presentation was strong. Facilities include a welcoming clubhouse with terrace, a good pro shop, a well-stocked halfway hut, and friendly staff. While a handful of holes are less memorable than the best stretches, Goring & Streatley offers an enjoyable and varied round that is well worth playing if you’re in the area.

In addition to the regular red (5487 yards), yellow (5874 yards) and white (6,265 yards)tees, Goring & Streatley gives you an extra option of the green (6,067 yards) tees. I opted for the green tees as they were tucked round the side of the clubhouse whereas the yellows were in front of the picture window from the club bar.
The course is built round a hill with holes 2-4 taking you up the hill and holes 14-18 taking you back down the hill. The middle holes are on the hill top plateau offering fantastic views of the Chiltern hills and surrounding countryside. There are some very good holes (2,7,14 and 18) but there are some holes where the fairway slopes so strongly from side to side that no matter where your ball lands, it will roll off the fairway (the issue will be even worse in the summer). This is particularly the case on hole 3 where there does not appear to be any area to land on the 70 yards approaching the green.
The chalk landscape leads to excellent natural drainage and the course was not in the least bit boggy underfoot despite the amount of rain in the weeks prior to my round. The greens were quick (like putting in my kitchen quick) and ran true.
There are 2 putting greens and a couple of nets near the first tee. About 500 yards from the clubhouse there is a full driving range and practice hole (3a) - you can drive up to this area and park there. The parking spaces in the main car park are quite tight.
While the course is great, the food in the clubhouse left something to be desired. I had a baguette and the bread was stale (speaking to some members, they do not rate the food but there are plenty of places to eat in Goring nearby).
A great course, playable in even the wettest season.

Used to be colleagues with some members so played a lot after work. Very welcoming and friendly, and a great location once you get "up top" this course nonetheless slightly struggles with a few of the holes being set against some very steep slopes. Those apart (couple on the front 9 and one on the back 9) then the rest is very pleasant and varied test of parkland golf; with the wind adding another whole dimension when it blows! Pro and barstaff hugely friendly and welcoming as are the other members and the green fee is good value, even bearing in mind the above.

Dus...

A very good test of your golfing abilities, long in places and in excellent condition, drains well in wetter weather. A lovely place to play if you're in the area between Reading and Oxford.
