Competentie gespeeeld op Groendael. Vrij korte holes dus een driver kan je eigenlijk wel thuis laten. De holes zijn niet gemakkelijk en vragen om tactisch spel, wat bij Matchplay natuurlijk erg leuk is. Het eten en de sfeer in het restaurant is heel goed. Het is dus een feestje om Groendael in je competitie te hebben (en die mannen waren zelfs best aardig 😜)

Tucked away between The Hague and the peaceful dunes of the Waalsdorpervlakte lies Groendael Golf Club, a beautifully designed nine-hole course by Bruno Steensels. It’s an impressive piece of work considering the limited space available, Steensels has managed to create a layout that feels varied, strategic, and quietly demanding. Although the holes are laid out close together, each one feels pleasantly secluded thanks to clever shaping and subtle landscaping. The routing is tight, so precision is rewarded here. If you tend to hit it straight and controlled, as many of the members seem to, you’ll find the course very playable. But if you’re longer off the tee and prone to a bit of dispersion, be prepared to call “Fore!” from time to time, the fairways on adjacent holes are often closer than they appear. Groendael is not a course you overpower; it’s one you outthink. A well-planned strategy is key to scoring well. You rarely need a driver, as a solid 200-metre tee shot usually sets up the next play nicely. Finding the right section of the fairway is crucial, only from good angles can you attack the small, well-protected greens. When we visited, the greens were in superb condition: quick, smooth, and true. The course’s compact nature adds to its charm, every hole feels purposeful. It’s the kind of layout that rewards familiarity, so I’d recommend playing the nine holes twice. The second loop allows you to adjust your strategy, and you’ll almost certainly play better once you’ve learned where the trouble lies. A few nice touches stand out. The par-3 holes have clear distance markers, so you don’t need to reach for your rangefinder. There’s plenty of water in play too, especially near the greens, which keeps you on your toes both off the tee and on approach. Off the course, the clubhouse staff were friendly and welcoming, and the scorecard design made it easy to track both strokes and Stableford points for 18 holes, a small but smart detail. Parking can be a little tight near the clubhouse, so when leaving it’s best to reverse out and turn around by the driving range rather than trying to exit directly. All in all, Groendael Golf Club is a genuine hidden gem, a clever, compact course on excellent sandy soil and just minutes from The Hague’s city limits. It’s private and only accessible when invited by a member, but if you ever get the chance, don’t miss it. Groendael rewards thoughtful golf, and you’ll leave wanting to play it again.

Recentelijk weer, op uitnodiging, gespeeld op deze mooie golfbaan. Zeer uitdagende holes, slimme waterhindernissen en goed geprepareerde greens. Het is geen easy course, het is een course die course management vereist, m.a.w. de driver is niet altijd de juiste keuze.
