This golf course is quite difficult on many fronts. Few holes you have to hit far over the reeds (particularly 11th, 17th and 18th), several holes run along the water hazard and all greens are deceiving - they look rather straight, but are not and adding speed of the greens they are difficult to read. The course design is excellent with the iconic par3 7th, but many other holes are fabulous (and difficult). The club has all the facilities, although chipping green, bunker green and driving range is at some distance from the club. The condition of everything is greatly maintained and there is a lot of work involved, particularly keeping areas under the trees clean. Highly recommended if you don't mind hardship on the course.

The hospitality is the thing I would call out first here. The welcome at reception was heartwarming. You receive a goody bag and a personalized bag tag. Never seen it before, absolutely loved it. Afterwards everyone is very helpful to get you going on your round.
The round starts of with a steep uphill tee shot. The altitude difference on course will be a ever present companion during your round. Some greens are raised, some lowered, so club selection is a constant challenge. Especially as the wind starts playing its part.
There are some standout unique holes here. Holes 7,9,10,15 and 16 come to mind immediately. But the rest of the holes aren’t boring as well. That makes the course a well rounded fun round to play.
At €150 you pay considerably less than you do at the more famous links courses along the west coast. That does make Dromoland Castle a hidden gem in this area. I would definitely recommend any golfer to come play here, during a Irish golf trips.
