About Wallasey Golf Club

The Wallasey Golf Club was established in 1891 and has conventional links of 6,607 yards with its undulating fairways and dunes. It is located overlooking Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea on the Wirral peninsula, leaving it open to the daunting sea breeze. It is one of the great northern links courses, originally designed by Tom Morris Senior and later altered by Alec Herd, Harold Hilton and James Braid — other notable golfing figures. Many great events have been hosted by the course, including The Open's qualifying rounds, most recently when the championship returned to nearby Royal Liverpool in 2006. The club hosted the qualification rounds of the Amateur Championship in 1995 and again in 2000.

As soon as you arrive at the clubhouse at Wallasey GC, you will be struck by the plaques celebrating Dr. Frank Stableford, who is said to have devised the scoring system used to this day right here on the second hole. The second hole is quite a monster, a 400-meter par 4. The 4th hole is spectacular. It is played downhill onto a very wide fairway, which it shares with the 17th hole. The sea can be seen from the tees. After nine holes, you will approach the clubhouse, which is atypical for a links course. The 10th hole is a beautiful par 4, a short dogleg with a green on a high hill. The 12th hole is perfect, a short par 3 well protected by five pot bunkers. Classic pot bunkers are complemented by modern-shaped bunkers.

Played Wallasey as part of a golf trip with The Golf Traveler to Liverpool which also included Royal Liverpool-Hoy Lake, Formby Golf Club and Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Wallasey is a real links course and showed its teeth this day with wind speeds of 7 up to 9 Beaufort. Sometimes keeping your balance while swinging was an art in itself. But fortunately it stayed dry, making it all in all a great experience. A wonderful course that on a day like this offered a challenge that I would not have wanted to miss! A good score was simply not possible, but despite that it was a lot of fun.

The sea is visible almost everywhere and can certainly be heard and felt: a real linksgolf experience. Beautiful holes, long, short, dog legs, elevated tees or greens, you will encounter everything. Highlights for me are the beautiful par-3 12th, and the closing par-4s 17 and 18.

Wallasey is the Home of Stableford. It was here that Mr Frank Stableford devised the census in 1932 that subsequently came to bear his name. The first Stableford competition was organized at Wallasey on May 16,1932.

Course maintenance, fairways and greens are of a level that you would expect in this region. Little or nothing to complain about. A modest, but typically traditional English clubhouse and pro shop complete the feeling of a good day out on the Links. Even in stormy conditons!

Their course is a true test of golf, partly due to the prevailing northwesterly winds and the variety of holes making its natural terrain all the more fascinating. Among the toughest are the final four holes – particularly the 18th, which is a wonderful hole to complete the round. Wallasey Golf Club's course has been described as 'The Diamond in the Dunes'. The challenge of the course, as well as the famous history and traditions of the game, will be enjoyed by golfers who come here.
