Golfklúbbur Vatnsleysustrandar

This 9-holes course is situated in the shadow of big brother Keilir, but you will probably have much more fun here. We arrived here on a Saturday morning (without a reservation, which is in general not necessary in Iceland), and although it was 'busy' (for Icelandic standards), we were easily fit it. Out of the three courses we played in Iceland, this one was absolutely best maintained; well mature fairways, challenging roughs and nice greens. The course is surrounded by lava fields, so you need to be quite sharp on the fairway, because beyond that it's a hopeless mission. The environment is simply breathtaking (on clear days though); lava fields on one side, a deep blue ocean on the other and across the bay at good distance snow-capped mountain peaks and volcanoes. Clubhouse is small and standard, unfortunately changing facilities and showers are missing. Maybe this comes in the near future as a map in the hall betrays the aspirations of this club; growing to a 18 holes course including hotel facilities. I would definitely return and prefer this course over the more famous (and expensive and elite) Keilir. Greenfee for 9 holes: ISK 2500 per person, carts are free.

Fraaie golfbaan op en tussen de lavarotsen, dicht aan de kust, midden in de natuur. Bebouwing? Ja, een typisch IJslands kerkje. Voor Golfbaanhandboek een bezoek gebracht aan deze verenigingsbaan, niet gespeeld. Drivingrange zonder bebouwing, oefengreen, goed onderhouden greens, fairways en tees en bunkers van geel zand! Grutto, wulp, visdiefje, Noorse stern, watersnip, tapuit en graspieper zijn de gasten tussen en rond de golfers. De wind heeft sterke invloed op het spel, naast de overal in IJsland dodelijke rough. Leuk houten clubhuis, nieuw, met alles in beperkte mate aanwezig: bar, prijzenwand en shop (zie de foto's). Zoals op nagenoeg alle IJslandse banen, zie en voel je dat de IJslander van golf houden zoals dat in z'n oorspronkelijke vorm in het veld werd gedaan. Alles eenvoudig, eerlijk, natuurlijk en zonder uitbundig kwaliteitsstreven van baan en faciliteiten.
