Niet goedkoop maar met het twilight tarief goed te doen. Mooie afwisselende baan. Ondanks droogte toch goed speelbare fairways. Behoorlijk brede fairways dus wel wat foutmarge, tenzij je in het waistland komt. Aanrader al met al!

Tierra del Sol has recently been purchased and renovated completely. Especially out on course, the improvements are big and noticeable. Maintenance at the moment is above par, the layout is very varied and interesting and the views are simply lovely. I do hope the new owners keep on improving the club, as there are a few distinct dislikes left. But let’s start with the likes. The course is stunning, with dramatic views of the island and the surrounding sea. The views from the 10’s tee and 18’s green rival any view on Aruba. The first starts you of on a long par 5, passaat wind in the back and view on the sea. Hole 3 already offers a par 3 with an amazing photo opportunity. Then you turn back round into the wind and you find out how well designed this course really is. Into the prevailing wind, the holes are shorter and more technical. This continues the entire course. No holes are similar, they all play with the strong winds and you won’t get bored out here. Even on a third or fourth attempt. On top on the great golf course, a few other distinct likes. There is a cart going round all the time with food and beverage, love it. The restaurant sits atop the first tee and offers even better views. If lucky, the local iguanas will accompany you. The service is excellent with only friendly people. Definitely enough reason to come and play this course if you’re around. There are however, a few distinct dislikes. First and foremost, and unforgivable for a golf course, there are no showers for visiting players. Put together with the abysmal driving range, my score for the facilities will be quite low. Second, the course is surrounded by rocky wasteland. As an amateur, I’m not hitting a ball from rocks and damaging my clubs. But there are no hazard stakes, so PGA rules will force you back to where you came from. Of course, nobody does this, so it becomes a bit of a weird ‘make-it-up-yourself’ round. And there are more oddities. The third time we played it was clearly a morning where the maintenance crews were active. They simply won’t wave you through. Either ignoring you, or inviting you to hit towards them. Both aren’t my preference. Our second nine on that day didn’t have a single tee box. All the markers lay to the side, so we once again had to ‘make-it-up-ourselves’. And that brings me to the biggest of faults, the green fee. I was lucky to play with a member but a green fee player is down $300 for a round. This is clearly catered to the American market, where tourists don’t know what they’re paying for what. But compared to other $300 courses, this course falls flat. The only stand out aspect are the views, the rest isn’t worth this amount of money. So, having been invited, I loved this course. The views are spectacular and the people are friendly. Would I recommend this course to a green fee player? I don’t know, maybe only once and only if they have a limp from their huge wallet.

Aan de woeste noordkant van Aruba gelegen aan de voet van de California vuurtoren met prachtige uitzichten over de kust en het eiland. Volop zon en warmte maar altijd met een verkoelende passaatwind. De fairways zijn wat hard door matig onderhoud, maar daardoor loopt de bal wel lekker door. De wind is krachtig zodat daar wel rekening mee gehouden moet worden. Mooie lange holes met voldoende hoogteverschillen en om de 3 holes een watertappunt. Voor de echte dorst komt de horeca-wagen regelmatig langs. Fraai clubhuis met restaurant, goed geoutilleerde proshop en vrij gebruik van alle oefenfaciliteiten. Voor een dollartip worden de clubs en schoenen schoongemaakt.

Tsja…. wat moet ik over deze baan nou schrijven? De ligging is top, in de punt van Aruba met mooie uitzichten op zee. De wind geeft het spelen een mooie extra uitdaging, soms 30 meter rechts mikken en dan bal op fairway zien landen is leuke challenge. De baan zelf is voor wat je ervoor moet betalen ver ondermaats qua prijs/kwaliteit. Het zal niet eenvoudig zijn om in dit klimaat alles op peil te houden maar als op hole 7 het gras op de afslag letterlijk enkel-hoog staat dan is dat gewoon slecht. Mijn zoon, die met zijn Hcp 2 vanaf goud afsloeg moest eerst een afslag plek creëren door met zijn club gras weg te maaien…. hahaha. De bunkers hebben in de meeste gevallen geen harken en liggen er bij zoals je dan kunt verwachten. De greens zijn vlak en in okay toestand. Clubs huren zou ik afraden, sets zijn zeker 4-5 jaar oud, een mix van verschillende merken en zien er slecht uit….. en dat voor 100 dollar. Al met al niet een aanrader wat mij betreft, wij vonden het erg teleurstellend.

Wat een teleurstelling. Voor een bedrag van $ 443,- (!) kregen mijn vrouw en ik ieder een greenfee voor 18 holes, een set afgeragde golfclubs van verschillende merken, een driver met deuken in het clubhoofd en een paar (goede) schoenen. De buggies zijn ook niet de nieuwste, hebben overigens wel gps. De oefengreen was al een voorbode van hoe de baan er uit zou zien. De holes van de oefengreen waren gewoon gaten in de grond zonder cup met uitbundig gras groeiend over de rand heen. Ook geen vlaggenstok of zo.

Ok. De receptioniste was vriendelijk en de starter uiterst correct. Vervolgens de baan gespeeld. Wat een drama. Het onderhoud is ver ondermaats. Slechts in een paar bunkers ligt dan één hark, nou dan weet je het wel hoe de bunkers erbij liggen. De greens zijn uiterst traag allemaal vlak, geen ondulaties, dus op zich eenvoudig te putten. De baan op zich is natuurlijk best interessant en ligt in een fantastische omgeving. Ik geloof dat Robert Trent Jones deze baan heeft ontworpen. Als hij hier ooit terug zou komen zal hij een rolberoerte krijgen.

De back nine met hoogteverschillen is overigens leuker en mooier dan de eerste negen.

Het clubhuis en de bediening zijn perfect. De bediening zoals overigens op geheel Aruba is buitengewoon vriendelijk en attent.

Al met al een grote teleurstelling. Deze baan is het geld echt niet waard!
