About Kloof Country Club

Originating from the mind of Tom Field in 1926 and re-designed into an 18-hole course in 1929 by Stafford Vere Hotchkin, It is no accident that the Course is home to the Champion of Champions for the Kwa-Zulu Natal Region. The course setting has with views that run deep to Durban’s beaches and an abundance of indigenous flora and fauna. The Penncross bent grass is resistant to winter temperatures and ensures that this golf course is scenic all year round. Additional entertainment is provided by the Woolly Necked Stalks, African Hoopoes and crested barbets that inhabit the lush parkland.

Kloof is a decent golf course, without being spectacular. There are some interesting holes, one or two where water comes in to play but ultimately it is more parkland with plenty of trees about.

We found it a quite tough to hit the greens, most were quite small and there were plenty of bunkers around to make finding the greens a challenge. Interestingly it is a par 70, so at 5670 meters off the men’s tees it isn’t exactly a short course. There’s plenty of changes in elevation but a lot of the holes were quite straight, felt like it was maybe lacking a bit of character. The condition wasn’t amazing, the fairways had pretty poor drainage and were quite boggy.

The driving range is almost non-existent, there’s space there but you’d have to bring your own balls and apart from that there was a practice green in front of the clubhouse.

Think if the course was in better condition I’d be keener to come back.

The fairways were very tight in places on long par 4s there was no landing area. The fringes around the greens were not in good repair and there was inconsistency in the different types of grass on the fairways and in the rough. Green staff didn’t pause using machinery when you went to play a shot. Some unfair and awkward tees such as the ladies on the 18th.

They need to make it a bit cheaper, greens more friendly (softer)
