About The Mauritius Gymkhana Club

Mauritius is the fourth country where golf was introduced by the Officers of the British Military after Scotland, England and India. The Mauritius Gymkhana Club golf course is the oldest one of the Southern Hemisphere for having golf played on its grounds since 1844. The MGC golf course is 5.6 kilometres long and a par 68. Despite the fact that it is a relatively short course, it offers great challenges to the players. As it is very tight, precision and technical skills are called for. More interestingly, the MGC golf course is playable and enjoyable by golfers of all levels. The course comprises of 18 holes of which six holes of par 3, two holes of par 5 and finally ten holes of par 4. The shortest being hole No.5 playing 132 metres while the longest being hole No.6 playing 455 metres long. There is also a Night Driving range for those wanting to practice at late hours.

You won't find finely-manicured fairways here more of a weedy grass but the ball plays okay off it. The greens are quite good but the bunkers are bare so it's difficult to stop the ball from the green side bunkers. No water hazards. There's a couple of tricky holes but a lot of par 3s and a couple of driveable par 4s and short par 5s - all means you can score well here. Ladies tee off from same place as men on most holes so no advantage for ladies. No golf carts and visitors require use of a caddy. The clubhouse is friendly but looks its age (character?). Bar snacks are very good but limited choice of beers. Overall for tourists it's probably only worth playing here if you are an addict but it is affordable and the members enjoy their golf.
